Bud Light
When you hear the word “Bud,” what usually comes to mind is an alcoholic beverage that most Schick graduates no longer have a use for. I received a phone call one morning in August from a graduate who wanted to share his story of how Schick Shadel saved his life.
His name was Bud and he was a happy graduate from the class of 1964. Bud was treated for alcohol addiction at the original Shadel Hospital location, a modified private mansion Charles Shadel founded in 1935. Bud completed his follow-up treatments (re-caps) at our current location in Burien, Washington when our building was brand new. Bud reminded me that we youngsters had it easy, only needing to complete a couple two day follow-ups after the initial ten day treatment. Back in 1964, patients were required to complete five-two day follow-up treatments!
Bud is looking forward to the next 44 years because he says “They just keep getting better!”
Forty four years later, Bud told me that he felt compelled to share his story on how our great hospital saved his life. He doesn’t pull any punches when he tells patients and graduates that he surely would have been dead without Schick! Since that time, Bud has been to many graduate groups and continually illuminates others with the light that radiates from his story of transformation. At 75 years young with 44 years of Schick sobriety, Bud is looking forward to the next 44 years because he says “They just keep getting better!”
